How do Black Carbon (BC) aerosols influence Arctic climate change? The outcome of the ‘BlackArc’ project is to reduce the uncertainty in modelling BC and to better constrain the climate impact of BC with an Arctic focus.
BC aerosols emitted by human activities are a major climate warming agent, with estimated climate forcing up to about half (IPCC, 2013) to two-thirds (Bond et al., 2013) that of CO2. BC sources also contribute significantly to air pollution. Major sources of these BC aerosols (e.g., combustion from diesel engines, biomass burning, residential biofuels) are in regions undergoing rapid growth and consequently atmospheric burdens are increasing. Broad national and international efforts are now underway to formulate BC emissions reduction policies since such reductions would simultaneously reduce near-term climate warming and improve public health.
